Introduction to climbing & abseiling

Rock climbing is an exciting (and highly addictive!!!) sport, which is great for developing physical strength. A brilliant activity for those who like problem solving - working out the sequences of moves to get up a climb and reaching the top gives a real buzz and will have you yearning to get on the next climb!

Abseiling is defined as the controlled descent off a vertical drop, such as a rock face, using a rope. Why would you do that, you might ask?? But abseiling is actually a really fun and rewarding adventure activity, especially when enjoyed with a group of friends, all offering gentle encouragement to each other to take those first often tentative steps off the top of the crag. Our abseiling sessions take place in beautiful settings, with the venues offering the intrepid abseiler stunningly unique views of the surrounding landscape.

All activities are closely supervised by our expert instructors and all specialist equipment is provided, allowing you to enjoy the challenge and vertical adventure of climbing and abseiling safe in the knowledge that you are in good hands. During the session, you will have chance to practice a number of key skills including belaying and tying into the rope, both essential skills for carrying on your climbing elsewhere, such as at a local climbing wall. Your instructor will be on hand to offer tips and advice as to how you can improve your climbing, and privately guided sessions can be half, full or multi-day taking in a number of different venues, whatever you wish.

Many people who get hooked on climbing and abseiling continue on to undertake spectacular and highly rewarding climbs around the world in places such as Scotland, the Alps and further afield.

Yorkshire Dales Guides are excited to have our very own indoor climbing wall and vertical ropes facility on site. Perfect for wet-weather days, or groups wishing to enjoy a fun day indoors learning to climb and abseil (e.g. kid’s birthday party, school group, or as part of a corporate team building day).

Outdoor rock climbing & abseiling

The Yorkshire Dales has some superb climbing at limestone venues such as Twistleton Scar, Giggleswick, Moughton, Attermire and more challenging venues such as the famous Malham Cove and Kilnsey Crag. As well as more 'traditional climbing' venues, the Yorkshire Dales has some fantastic sporting crags too with loads of bolted routes to go at. Whether you are someone who hasn’t climbed for a while, or a regular climber visiting the Dales for the first time and wanting to tick off some great routes, why not book one of our instructors for the day and head to one of these classic venues for a great half or full days climbing?

All equipment can be provided if required, and the session will be tailored to your exact wishes and requirements – this includes putting a bespoke course together for you if you are looking to build on your climbing skills and ropework.

Please get in touch to discuss your requirements.

What to expect

Your climbing and/or abseiling experience will either begin at our premises near Settle, or at the parking location for the crags being visited. In both cases, you will be met and briefed by your highly experienced instructor, and then kitted out in the required equipment before walking in to the crag(s) for your climb.

In the event of bad weather we can move to a nearby purpose-built climbing wall, or our very own indoor climbing wall at the Yorkshire Dales Guides outdoor activity centre.

Equipment
A kit list of what to bring will be sent out to all participants ahead of the climbing session, which normally includes the usual clothing and footwear you would wear for a day out walking in the hills, and some snacks/a drink.

Climbing harness & belay device
Helmet
Rock shoes – not provided for ‘open-group’ sessions. Must be booked in advance, and subject to availability

For both the climbing and abseiling, all participants will be protected by a safety rope, so there’s really nothing to worry about! 😊
