Above & Below the Dales

This full day adventure is as the title says....Above and Below the Yorkshire Dales!

The day will start by meeting your guide in the stunning Chapel-le-Dale valley above Ingleton. You will then tackle Ingleborough, one of the famous Yorkshire Three Peaks, with its summit at a very respectable 724m above sea level, allowing for stunning views across the Three Peaks area and to the Lake District mountains and Morecambe Bay!

On the way to the summit, you will learn all about the fascinating and unique geology and geography of the area, as well as get a chance to see limestone pavements and potentially some rare wildflowers depending on the time of year!

The walk will take around 3-4hrs (5miles and 450m ascent) after which we'll return to the car park and don our caving kit ready for a trip into a proper 'wild' cave - Great Douk Cave. This is a brilliant cave perfect for the novice explorer and has a spectacular entrance leading into half a mile of clean-washed streamway and cascades adorned with ancient formations and fossil rich walls. The caving trip will last for around 1.5hrs meaning we should be back at the cars for around 4.30pm.

A great day out, and chance to see some of the best of the Yorkshire Dales in just one fun filled day!

Minimum age 8 years. Full details including medical forms, kit lists of what to bring and directions to the starting location will be issued following booking.  In the event of very poor weather meaning we cannot summit Ingleborough or visit Greak Douk Cave, then we do have some excellent alternative lower level walks and caves we can visit instead. No refunds.

Introduction to Climbing and Abseiling

Rock climbing is an exciting (and highly addictive!) sport, which is great for developing physical strength. These afternoon climbing sessions are designed for people who have always wanted to have a go at climbing and have little or no experience. This taster session will introduce you to climbing on our wonderful local limestone.

Your highly experienced and qualified instructor will meet you at the climbing venue, which will most likely be in the Settle or Ingleton area. Full directions (as well as more information about the day) will be given upon booking, as well as a kit list detailing what to bring although we will provide all the required climbing kit including helmet and harness.

Minimum age normally 8 yrs. No refunds.

Wildflowers of the Yorkshire Dales

The Yorkshire Dales are home to some of the most beautiful and varied, as well as some of the rarest, wildflowers in the UK, thanks to the lime-rich soils of this amazing Karst environment.

These informal guided wildflower walks are aimed at those who’d like to get their ‘eye in’ and expand their knowledge of the wildflowers of the Yorkshire Dales and their whereabouts. Learning materials for aiding identification will be provided and shared on the day, and the emphasis will very much be on slowing down the pace and carefully exploring an area to see what we can find.

Details of meeting location and venue will be provided closer to the time, but will be in the Settle and Three Peaks area unless otherwise stated (i.e. within 20-30mins drive of Settle). Full details including kit lists of what to bring (footwear and clothing suitable for hiking), directions and medical forms will be provided upon booking.

Minimum age normally 7-8 yrs (or younger if parents willing to carry). We will be venturing onto lanes, up small hills and into woodland, so the sessions are not suitable for buggies or wheelchairs. No refunds.

Wharfedale Three Peaks

The Wharfedale Three Peaks walk is a stunning route starting and finishing in Kettlewell and taking in the three peaks of Birks Fell (610m), Buckden Pike (702m) and Great Whernside (704m).

It is a superb alternative to the hugely popular Yorkshire Three Peaks walk, and at around 22 miles in length with 1,300m of ascent, its no walk in the park either!

Venturing over quieter hills and ridges of the Dales, you will be treated to amazing views with a remoter feel to them. We will aim to meet in the National Park car park in Kettlewell for 7.30am. Leaving the car park, the route takes us onto Birks Fell first, where a long, wild ridge is soon gained and easier, if a bit boggy in places, going leads to the descent down into Langstrothdale - a stunning and peaceful valley. The support vehicle will meet the group here, and provide extra water, first aid (e.g. blister treatment) and a friendly face before you get back on the trail via a lovely traversing path towards Buckden Pike. Buckden Pike and Great Whernside follow in fairly quick succession (the support vehicle will meet you again between the two peaks), again offering tremendous views, before the descent back down into Kettlewell.

The day is particularly suited to those who have completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge, and are looking for a similar day out on the hills. Alternatively, determined walkers of average or above fitness who are up for a very rewarding day in the hills!  Please note that while the route does involve lots of great paths, we will cross several sections of wild, pathless terrain (nature dependant on recent rainfall and ground conditions).

You will be accompanied by a highly experienced, local guide, and a support vehicle and member of staff will follow the groups progress, meeting the group at several road crossings along the route. This does give the chance for anyone struggling to retire and grab a lift back to Kettlewell if required.

So, come and join Yorkshire Dales Guides for a fantastic day out on the hills of the Yorkshire Dales!!

Minimum age 16yrs. Full details including medical forms, kit lists of what to bring, and directions will be provided upon booking. In the event of very poor weather meaning we cannot take on the entire route, an alternative lower-level route will be offered keeping in the spirit of a challenging day out. No refunds.

Please also note that whilst we will do our best to get everyone around the route, this is a long and challenging day, which will need to be completed in daylight. Therefore we have generous cut-offs in place, which we may need to enforce if members of the group are struggling or unable to keep up with the group. Given our early start, this rarely needs to be enforced, but please get in touch at info@yorkshiredalesguides.co.uk if you wish to discuss your suitability for the day! We are here to help! :-)
